The squares represent the gentlemen (think of square shoulders) and the circles represent the ladies (think of curves). The letter S shows the position of the swing.
When there is more than one swing, they are numbered with subscripts to show the order of the swings. Occasionally the tracks of action are also numbered to show the order in which they are followed.
Dotted and solid lines have no significance except to keep different tracks from being confused with each other,
The portion of the action which a diagram represents is indicated by the letters under it. "B" and "C" would indicate that it represents that section of the call numbered "b" and "a"
The number in the circle or the square indicates whether it is the first, second, third, or fourth lady or gentleman,
By noting the crook or bend of the arm in some diagrams you can determine which direction a figure is facing, |
